It combines the functionality of services like Google Drive, Dropbox, and Microsoft Office into a single, self-hosted platform. With built-in support for file syncing, calendar and contact management, video calls, collaborative document editing, and even email, Nextcloud is perfect for individuals, families, and businesses looking to break free from third-party cloud providers and maintain privacy without sacrificing convenience.

In this video, I walk you through a step-by-step tutorial on how to set up Nextcloud, the powerful open-source platform for building your own private cloud.

This tutorial video provides detailed guidance on self-hosting Nextcloud within a virtualized environment. We begin by selecting a hypervisor—in this case, I chose Proxmox Virtual Environment for its flexibility and robust management features. Next, we create a virtual machine running a Linux-based operating system to serve as the foundation for our Nextcloud deployment. While there are many options available, I opted for Debian 12 due to its stability and compatibility with containerized applications. Once the VM is up and running, we install Docker and Docker Compose, essential tools that make it easy to deploy and manage Nextcloud in a lightweight, isolated container. From there, we configure the container environment, set up persistent storage, and launch Nextcloud, giving you a fully functional private cloud solution accessible from anywhere.
