Process

The setup process began with the Dell PowerEdge R730 server. I updated all firmware components using Dell’s Lifecycle Controller and iDRAC, ensuring hardware reliability and performance optimization from the start.

I configured the internal RAID to RAID 0, as Veeam Backup Manager provides comprehensive backup and redundancy, making RAID 0 a viable choice for maximum performance and storage utilization. This RAID configuration ensures high throughput and optimal usage of available storage.

Networking configurations were set up meticulously, assigning dedicated IP addresses and management access via iDRAC, facilitating remote and efficient server management. I installed VMware ESXi as the chosen hypervisor, allowing me to gain practical experience with a virtualization platform widely adopted in enterprise environments. Previously, I utilized Proxmox VE on a Dell PowerEdge R710, but shifted to VMware to expand my skillset and align with industry-standard practices.

The Dell EqualLogic PS6500 SAN setup involved configuring RAID 10 through the EqualLogic Group Manager, delivering both redundancy and performance. With 96TB total storage capacity, the RAID 10 configuration resulted in approximately 48TB of usable space. I established a dedicated iSCSI network utilizing Jumbo Frames and configured multipathing between the SAN and the Dell PowerEdge server for enhanced throughput and reliability.

Within this SAN setup, I provisioned a 30TB volume accessible via iSCSI to an Ubuntu Server virtual machine running Jellyfin. Multipathing was configured directly on Ubuntu via the command line, optimizing storage access and reliability. To facilitate easy media file access from my main Windows PC, SMB file sharing was implemented, allowing seamless media management and integration.

Finally, enhancing overall network performance, I set up a dedicated 10 Gigabit Ethernet connection between my Windows PC and the server, installing a 10Gb NIC in my PC to leverage the high-speed connection. This ensured optimal data transfer speeds for large media files and efficient virtual machine management.

Conclusion

My homelab server and storage setup with the Dell PowerEdge R730 and Dell EqualLogic PS6500 SAN provides a robust, versatile, and educational environment. Leveraging VMware ESXi, advanced networking strategies, and dedicated storage management, this infrastructure delivers practical experience and exceptional performance, laying the foundation for a comprehensive understanding of enterprise-grade IT environments.
